PRESS RELEASE

“BPP Speaks on Guatemala's Rejection of GOB's 11 Point Proposal”

Your Belize Progressive Party (BPP) views Guatemala’s rejection of the GOB’s 11 Point Proposal regarding the Sarstoon River as that of a foregone conclusion. As is evidenced by the bipartisan FAILED “4A Policy” of: APPEASEMENT, ACQUIESCENCE, ACCOMMODATION and ADHERENCE, those who are guiding our nation continue to make inexcusable misjudgments and determinations.

In effect, by putting forth such proposals concerning the Sarstoon River, where none existed prior, the GOB, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, committed a grave miscalculation, for insodoing it not only set the stage for Guatemala to provide what amounts to a slap in the face, but even more egregious is that it also provided the Guatemalans with the proverbial “paper trail” that, heaven forbid, if the matter is taken to the ICJ, can serve as an example of the effective administration of the Sarstoon River. This is inherently dangerous, yet as with this ongoing and most unfortunate saga, was not unforeseen by the BPP.

In effect the BPP vehemently rebukes the Guatemalan Government for its insistent obstinacy as well as the GOB for persisting with its misguided, ill-conceived and neophyte handling of this extremely important matter of national security. We remind the Belizeans and true friends of Belize, both at home and abroad that the singular narrative being put forth by the GOB is disingenuous, for there is an alternative to going to the ICJ.
