BPP Commonwealth Day Message
Amid the unmitigated and unprovoked aggression being perpetrated by Guatemala against our sovereign nation, and the willful negligence demonstrated by the elected government, your Belize Progressive Party takes this opportunity to ask all Belizeans worldwide to take stock of matters afoot, as we acknowledge Commonwealth Day. Ask yourselves, what is the significance of Belize’s membership in the Commonwealth of Nations? Recently, Commonwealth Secretary-General Scotland reaffirmed the commitment made by the Commonwealth’s 53 governments at their 2015 summit, to fully support Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Albeit a noteworthy sentiment, the BPP wishes to highlight that calling for a peaceful resolution is not nearly enough, when it is indisputable that Guatemala has no intent to engender peace. Of greater concern is that Secretary General Scotland later congratulated the OAS on the manner in which they are “handling” the situation. It is for this reason, the BPP calls on civil society and Belizeans from all walks of life, to recognise that in terms of saving Belize from our most significant threat, both from within as well as outside our borders, we must take the lead and not expect anyone or any organisation to champion our cause. Therefore, in wishing you a reflective Commonwealth Day, your BPP requests all Belizeans and true friends of Belize, to continue conducting your due diligence so as to make prudent decisions based on what is in the best interest of Belize, no on what others advise. Stand up for Belize by saying “No to the ICJ! 8867 Today 8867 Tomorrow 8867 Forever Belize, Sovereign and Free - NO ICJ!
