"BPP REBUKES GOB'S INTENT TO AMEND REFERENDUM ACT"
Your Belize Progressive Party - BPP denounces in the most definitive of terms, the GOB’s announcement of its intent to amend our nation’s Referendum Act. The Prime Minister’s inclination, alone, reeks of a misguided and self-serving agenda, which is par for the course of his administration. To add insult to injury, his expressed intention, which negatively impacts our nation’s governance, is being done at the behest of the Guatemalans who, unquestionably, covet our sovereign territory. The expressed intent, by Mr. Barrow is proof positive of the PUDP’s FAILED DIPLOMACY, which persists via their “4A Policy” of: APPEASEMENT, ACQUIESCENCE, ACCOMMODATION and ADHERENCE. Such an egregious move by the government is inexcusable on many levels, particularly considering the dire need for a re-registration exercise, which is long overdue, in order to adequately clean the voters list. In its current state, the integrity of that all-important instrument is compromised, as it certainly contains throngs of Guatemalan nationals, who both the UDP and PUP illegally bus in to Belize during every election, in furtherance of their insidious agendas. The BPP contends that prior to the holding of the referendum, the Representation of the People’s Act (ROPA) must be amended so that no naturalised Guatemalan national, is allowed to vote, because the fact is that the Constitution clearly spells out the illegality of their being granted Belizean citizenship, due to their native country’s claim on sovereign Belizean territory. Your BPP sees this as the prime litmus test, concerning adherence to the Rule of Law.
On this matter of national significance, there is absolutely no reasonable explanation as to why Belize’s Referendum Act should be amended, as indicated by the PM. After all, amid the topical issue of offshore drilling for oil, it was the very same Dean Barrow who doggedly held to the appropriateness of what he now refers to as a “high threshold”. This is yet another example of the blatant disregard for the Rule of Law, which the executive branch harbours and subsequently remains hell-bent on doing as it pleases, irrespective of the negative effects on the nation. Belizeans and true friends of Belize, both at home and abroad and in particular, those who comprise the unions of this nation, the sitting government via its bipartisan collusion with the Opposition, has clearly demonstrated its contempt for the principles of good governance. They have no desire to ensure the will of the people is neither sought, nor respected. Simply put, to change the nation’s Referendum Act to require but a simple majority, on this issue of how to effectively address Guatemala’s unfounded claim, is not only wrong but can also be deemed treasonous.
Your Belize Progressive Party makes this call to action for all patriotic Belizeans to make known your dissatisfaction with the GOB’s affront to our nation’s governance. It is time to demonstrate to the powers that be, that their intended wholesale selling-out of this nation, shall not be tolerated. 8867 Today 8867 Tomorrow 8867 Forever
