"BPP Responds to PM's Press Conference"
This past week, the Prime Minister held a press conference that was “Vintage Barrow”, in terms of the contemptuous, yet crafty manner in which he sought to place, under public scrutiny, the Auditor General’s Report which detailed the scathing irregularities that have occurred during his watch. It was a noteworthy political performance, yet to the discerning public, it was clearly devoid of substance in terms of how the leader of this nation should function. Instead of commending the Auditor General, the PM squandered yet another opportunity to demonstrate genuine and to show that consecutive victories at the polls, translates into respectable, national stewardship. We at the Belize Progressive Party - BPP implore Belizeans from all walks of life, whether resident in Belize or abroad, to sift through the theatrics and white noise of the PM’s recital and focus on the substantive issues that were not addressed. Instead of agreeing to sign on to the UN Convention Against Corruption, without further delay, the Prime Minister fundamentally created additional layers of insulation, that will inevitably provide a buffer behind which he can hide, in plain sight. While the members of BPP have championed the call for Belize to sign on to UNCAC for the last 12 years, we remind the PM of his utter failure to obey our own Prevention of Corruption Act.
Concerning the Auditor General’s Report, the PM cast himself as: judge, jury and quite presumably executioner insofar as the manner in which the report was conducted, as opposed to dealing with the substantive issues of misconduct and outright corruption that persists involving matters of immigration. Your Belize Progressive Party - BPP cries shame on the PM for continuing to deceive the people, in the face of indisputable acts of corruption, which continue to burden and degrade our nation and calls on the people of this nation to demand that all elected officials who were cited in the Auditor General’s Report, be held accountable. Additionally, the BPP registers its utter disappointment with the decision of Senator Ashley Rocke, who represents the Church, due to his decision to inexplicably vote against convening a Senate Select Committee to address the issue of immigration-related irregularities, raised in the Auditor General’s report. In our view, if one is for transparency in government, there is no plausible excuse to vote against the motion that was proposed in the Senate, and to go against the wishes of the churches that he represents in the Senate. As a result, we join the chorus of voices which call for his immediate resignation.
