"BPP Calls On PUP To Pay POCA Fines"
Yesterday’s grandstanding, on National Service Day, by the PUP Parliamentarians who have finally declared their assets was noteworthy, because it was a classic case of concocted deception, as their actions touched on only part of the entire picture. In the discipline of Public Administration, there exists the reality of doing things purely for political expediency and given the full scope of matters as it relates to the Prevention of Corruption Act (POCA), Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition is yet again, remaining par for the course in terms of their deceptive disposition. Reference Section 19 (1) a - c and (2) (1) a - c of the POCA and it is clear the PUP, by way of this latest show, has fallen far short of their LEGAL obligation. In effect, they “forgot” to pay their dues! The math is simple:$100.00 is assessed for every day you are late in declaring your assets. There is also a $3,000.00 and $5,000.00 fine for first and second offenses. Certainly they have not forgotten this, for it was the PUP who amended the Prevention of Corruption Act (POCA) in 2007.
For the Leader of the Opposition to claim that yesterday’s show, was a “symbolic” gesture, clearly demonstrates that he fails to grasp that elected persons are REQUIRED BY LAW, to declare their assets and for each year they don’t, they are liable to pay a penalty. The Belize Progressive Party - BPP reminds Belizeans and true friends of Belize that partial compliance with the law, particularly when it is done for political expediency, is just as egregious as not following the law at-all. Adherence to the Rule of Law is the BPP’s premise and anything short of that is unacceptable. Therefore, your Belize Progressive Party - BPP calls on the Opposition to do the right thing and complete the process by fully adhering to the POCA, They must finish what they’ve started and commence paying the applicable fines. The BPP further reminds all 111 persons elected to town and city councils, the House of Representatives, all Senators including the Speaker of the house to obey the law and pay their fines.
The exercise of good governance practices and principles is about meaningful, substantive change, not half-stepping in order to gain political brownie points.
