PRESS RELEASE | "BPP DEMANDS THAT ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS PAY-UP UNDER POCA!"

"BPP DEMANDS THAT ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS PAY-UP UNDER POCA!"
Beyond the growing exposé of corruption that is coming to light concerning the Barrow Administration, your Belize Progressive Party - BPP wishes to remind the people of the systemic reality of just how corrupt Belize’s elected officials are, across party lines.
On 19th September the PUP, by admission of its leader, made a “symbolic” announcement of the intent of their elected representatives to declare their assets. We reminded them that such overtures are not in compliance with their LEGAL OBLIGATION under Section 19 (1) a - c and (2) (1) a - c of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Given that all elected persons are REQUIRED BY LAW, to declare their assets and for each year they don’t, they are liable to pay a penalty of $100.00 for every day they are late in declaring assets, in addition to a $3,000.00 and $5,000.00 fine for first and second offenses, we call on all 111 elected persons to comply!
With the recent stance by the BNTU to demand Good Governance, as well as their due salary increase, if elected representatives of both the UDP and PUP were to do the right thing and comply with POCA, those who were elected in 2008 would owe a maximum of Bz $1,553,800. each for non-compliance. In effect, those who have “served” and have yet to declare their assets collectively potentially owe in excess of 100 million in fines! That sum could easily cover the monies due to the teachers.
The Office of the Integrity Commission sends the necessary documentation to all elected officials on an annual basis, yet a majority willfully fail to comply.
Your Belize Progressive Party - BPP calls on all elected officials, beginning in 2008, who have not declared their assets to (1) do so and (2) pay the necessary fines. It is one thing to declare the GOB shall sign on to the UNCAC, and much like announcing that you shall declare your assets, both are shallow attempts by the PUPD to pacify the Belizean people. If neither side of the non-divide is willing to comply with Belize’s local ordinances, the likelihood of either of them fully implementing the UNCAC in a timely fashion is, at best remote.
Therefore, in the name of ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CORRUPTION and in keeping with the acceptance of, adherence to and promotion of GOOD GOVERNANCE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTISES, your Belize Progressive Party calls on ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS TO COMPLY WITH POCA, IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR COMMITMENT TO EFFECTING SUBSTANTIVE CHANGE.
After all, with so much outstanding monies due in penalties, the matter of providing the teachers with their due salary increase is purely academic.
