BPP STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY - 2016
As with the years preceding, in keeping with our principles, your Belize Progressive Party - BPP, stands firm in our commitment to champion this cause. Last year, we conducted a symbolic signing of the UNCAC in front of the PM’s Belize City office. Subsequently we remained steadfast in our conviction to bringing about a commitment by the powers that be, to Good Governance Practises and Principles. This was manifest via our unyielding support of the BNTU, the only union that was willing and able to mobilise and hold the Dean Barrow administration’s feet to the proverbial fire. The result, is the PM’s acquiescence to the will of the people via his begrudging decision to sign-on to the UNCAC. Today, as the House meets to undertake this important step, in what is fundamentally a process, the BPP wishes to attune Belizeans and true friends of Belize both at home and abroad, that albeit noteworthy, there is much more work to be done, so as to ensure that compliance with the UNCAC is achieved. Similarly, once again, we call on all elected officials to comply with Belize’s local anti-corruption legislation, the Prevention of Corruption Act (POCA). Earlier this year, we demanded that all who are in violation, do the right thing and pay the applicable fines. To-date, we have heard of no such effort by members of either side of the PUDP non-divide. In this regard, the BPP reminds one and all that such gross and intentional negligence is par for the course concerning both the sitting UDP administration and the Opposition PUP. Therefore, don’t be fooled by the shenanigans of the PUDP. If they were genuinely concerned with good governance, they would have complied with the POCA. Many pundits persist to criticise, meanwhile others abstain, but rest assured, your Belize Progressive Party - BPP, shall not waver on this critical matter of governance, for we recognise that in the midst of being in the final stage of corruption, that being TYRANNY, we are the only viable option through which Belize can be made a more equitable society.
