"BPP RESPONSE TO THE FIRST EDICT OF THE INTEGRITY COMMISSION"
Amid the fanfare involving yesterday’s announcement of the long-awaited “Integrity” Committee, the BPP is keen to point out that from the onset, it is clear that the entity is but a smokescreen by which to further perpetuate the intentional dysfunction that is fundamental to the PUDP system.
Much to our chagrin, the initial edict of the Commission’s Chair has inevitably demonstrated this. For the Commission to intentionally declare that under Section nineteen, sub-section two of the Prevention of Corruption Act (POCA), “...the Commission doesn’t fine persons for not meeting the deadline..”, is utterly reprehensible and, at best, disingenuous.
The BPP takes serious issue with this position, for it is a clear attempt to abrogate both the spirit and intention of the law. This is most unfortunate, not only because it was aspired that the establishment of the Integrity Commission would prove a meaningful step in the path toward ensuring: transparency, accountability and openness in government, but also because from the onset, it has been made absolutely clear that the Integrity Commission is a farce and an affront to the people of this nation.
With the incessant scandals involving elected officials, which is the norm, how can such an edict from the Commission, yield any confidence? Therefore, in the most definitive of terms, the Belize Progressive Party - BPP rebukes the expressed intent of the Integrity Commission to, in effect, give a pass to all elected officials, who since 2008, have knowingly broken the law, by not declaring their assets, as well as not paying the requisite fines.
It is due to this manner of chicanery that the BPP steadfastly puts forth that Belize is in the midst of the final stage of corruption, which is tyranny.
For the Integrity Commission to commence its operations, in such fashion, amounts to nothing more than a perpetuation of the intentional dysfunction which has bred the cesspool, that is Belize’s governance.
Therefore, the BPP calls on Belizeans and true friends of Belize, both at home and abroad, to join in the call for the Integrity Commission to fulfill its mandate and to not function as a tool through which those culpable of breaking the law, are summarily excused from their commitment to the people of this nation.
