"BPP DECRIES BARROW'S DISRESPECT FOR THE RULE OF LAW"
CCJ. Musa's PUP. Barrow's UDP. Ashcroft and his Belize Bank. The Belizean People.
Amid the corrupt practices of successive PUDP administrations, your Belize Progressive Party - BPP considers the current, unprecedented situation involving the Prime Minister’s stubborn stance to defy the ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice, a demonstration of not only his contempt for the supremacy of the judiciary, but also a manifestation of the monster of a Prime Minister that this corrupt PUDP system has created.
In no uncertain terms, the BPP decries Prime Minister Barrow’s intransigence on what is fundamentally a matter of reason. His obstinacy clearly made an already undesirable situation, created by his predecessor, far worse, to the point where an original Government loan of $33.5 million has ballooned to an unthinkable $88 million owing to its Belize Bank creditors.
After continued losses in various jurisdictions, with this final one coming by way of Belize’s final Court of Appeal, the CCJ, the PM has the audacity to attempt to exacerbate matters by purposefully attempting to cloud the issue as being one in which a vote in Parliament can mute the determination of the CCJ. Given his status as a Senior Counsel, he should be fully aware that such is not the case and therefore the ruling of the CCJ must be adhered to, for the legislature can never supercede the judiciary, in such matters.
It is this manner of hubris, which is on full-display by the Prime Minister, that reinforces our position that Belize has and continues to suffer from a lack of sober leadership.
Just as with the many schemes and controversies that have become synonymous with his successive administrations, this sordid episode, along with his ongoing attempts to deceive the people of Belize, can only result in a further deterioration of Belize’s financial status, international standing and future prospects involving the development of our economic and social sectors.
The bottom line is that a definitive and final court ruling has been rendered by the CCJ and in keeping with adherence to the Rule of Law, your Belize Progressive Party - BPP demands the PM cease and desist from playing games with the well-being of this nation, its people and our future generations.
In this regard, we call on the unions, civil society and the NGO community to join us in demanding that GOB pay its debt!
Belizeans are asked to contact their Area Representatives and mandate they vote to honour the CCJ’s ruling by paying the bank the outstanding monies or by arriving at an amicable settlement to satisfy the order made by the CCJ.
