NO TO ICJ: Compromis Inherent Risks to Belize

BY: Paco Smith | Chairman | BPP

Essentially, it is imperative that Belizeans understand that no former court judgment,, nor any legal opinion (all of which are outdated due to their failure to account for the dynamic nature of changes which are occurring - case in point, the aggressive stance by Guatemala and the GOB's lacklustre response concerning the Sarstoon River), shall ever negate the unnecessary, inherent risks to Belize, based on the parameters set by the Special Agreement/Compromis.

The pro-ICJ crowd have been singing the same old, skewed song for nearly a decade, despite the fact it has been demonstrated that other, viable options exist for Belize, particularly those which do not have such considerable risk to our territorial integrity.. Hence those ardent propoents of continuting to faciliate the whims of the Guatemalans, as they have via their FAILED bi-partisan "4A Policy" of: APPEASEMENT, ACQUIESCENCE, ACCOMMODATION and ADHERENCE are summarily guilty of looking at the forest meanwhile summarily failing to see the trees.

Belizeans need to stop being impressed by the very same individuals who have placed our nation at the precipice of being but one referendum poll away from potentially placing upwards of 53% of our sovereign territory on the chopping block at the ICJ, if we choose to blindly follow the advice of such individuals.

In sum, at this 11th hour, Belizeans must deal with the brass tacks of the matter in that, the risk to Belize is not only too high. It is also unnecessary, as there are documented, other means through which to address this matter of national significance, due to the current state of affairs, that will not entail Belize being exposed to such risk.
