PRESS RELEASE

"BPP Responds to US Ambassador"

Amid the heightened tensions brought on by the increased aggression and intentional baiting  by Guatemala, designed to cause an international incident, coupled with the willful negligence of the GOB, to adequately represent and defend the best interests of our nation, your Belize Progressive Party - BPP is concerned with the recent, public sentiment expressed by the US Ambassador to Belize, concerning matters involving Guatemala’s unfounded claim to our nation’s sovereign territory.

Among the most fundamental and important duties of all ambassadors, whether a career diplomat or a political appointee, is to represent the interests of their nation, to foreign governments. On 12th May 2016, in response to a query regarding his thoughts about the current situation involving Belize and Guatemala, his overt response stating, "Our position is and has been that the dispute after so many years since it's not been resolved, that the best and maybe the only course of action at this point is to refer the matter to the International Court of Justice….” , in our view, went beyond the ambit prescribed for diplomats.

Given the unbridled application of the Monroe Doctrine throughout this region, whether via tacit or explicit means, there is no question the US has its preference concerning such matters, which are underscored by economic interests. Nonetheless, such a public statement by their representative, concerning this extremely important issue which stands to impact Belize’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, especially given the volatile nature of matters afoot, is entirely regrettable.

With the prospect of an impending referendum on this paramount issue, alongside the intentionally singular narrative that has been promulgated by the powers that be, the choice of words by Ambassador Moreno comes extremely close to contravening the unwritten bounds, which prohibit envoys from meddling in the internal affairs of sovereign nations.

Your Belize Progressive Party reminds all Belizeans both at home and abroad, that irrespective of the opinion expressed by this gentleman, you are encouraged to conduct your own due diligence and recognise that a viable alternative beyond going to the ICJ exists and is in effect, more prudent, based on that which is in the best interest of our homeland, Belize.
